PODIATRY
What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist is a health professional who diagnoses and treats conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.
The conditions podiatrists treat include: soft-tissue and muscular pathologies, neurological and circulatory diseases as well as those resulting from bone and joint disorders such as arthritis. Foot injuries and infections gained through sport or other activities are also diagnosed and treated by podiatrists.
What is Biomechanics?
Biomechanics is the study of the structure and function of the human body via mechanical principles.
Musculoskeletal injuries are generally comprised of two broad categories; overuse and/or overload.
Gait Analysis?
Gait analysis is the study of human locomotion, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles.
It is used to assess, plan, and treat individuals with conditions affecting their ability to walk. It is also commonly used in sports to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries.
By acquiring the fundamental parameters of their patient’s gait, clinicians are able to quantitatively measure underlying mechanical inefficiencies and target any problematic areas. With this information, they can develop the right exercises and modalities to properly address the patient’s specific needs
What is involved in the Consultation?
Your Consultation will enable the Podiatrist to assess your problem and provide a detailed treatment plan. During the initial appointment a detailed history is taken, a thorough musculoskeletal assessment conducted to identify the injury and subsequently a biomechanical and gait assessment to determine the mechanical factors that are causing the injury.
The treatment plan may involve Orthotics, footwear advice, exercises, gait training , or appropriate onward referral for further diagnostic imaging.
What to bring to the Consultation?
The appointment often involves assessment of knee and hip function, so clothes that allow ease of movement are preferable (e.g. shorts). Please also bring with you any insoles that you have previously been prescribed.
Good supportive and well cushioned footwear is vital.
Please bring a selection of your most commonly worn shoes and sports shoes, so that these can be assessed.
What are Orthoses?
Orthoses (or orthotics) are special inserts designed for your shoes. They help to redistribute pressure and support your foot and leg.
There are wide range of Insoles and Orthotics that are available ranging from “off the shelf” Insoles to prescription custom-made Orthotics. In order for custom made Orthotics to be manufactured; a mould (a Cast) of the feet needs to be taken either with foam or plaster of Paris. This can be done during the Initial Consultation but a subsequent appointment is generally made for this. Sometimes one or more adjustments need to be made to the Orthotics to improve their efficacy or comfort.
